Is ADD Just An Excuse?

By Bruce · Wednesday, September 24th, 2008 · No Comments »

What is ADD - just an excuse?

When I speak to someone about my ADD I sometimes get this reaction.

“Oh God, someone else trying to blame behavior on some kinda disease. “

Of course my first inclination is to get upset.

“Excuse me ?” I’ll say. ” What exactly do you know about ADD ? “”Well…” he/she will say, ” Its just an excuse for either bad parenting or for laziness. Why don’t you just do something when you’re supposed to do it ? “

(Right, like its that easy. )

I used to argue the point with them, but I found that this never worked. so I decided to try something new. Ahhhh….creativity, one of the BENEFITS of ADD. Read the rest of this entry »

Without Adderall

By Bruce · Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 · No Comments »

My wife and I went away for the weekend (21rst Anniversary), and I forgot ALL of my medications except for the insulin pump.     This meant, no Adderall and no Pristiq for two days, as well as Metformin, Blood pressure meds, and every else.

Didn’t really feel any different on Saturday.   Except for the fact that I was able to,  shall we say, ‘enjoy intimate relations’ with my wife more so than usual.  Read the rest of this entry »

Description Of ADD vs. ADHD

By Bruce · Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008 · No Comments »

Found this page that describes the difference between ADD and ADHD.  Everytime I read a description of ADD I am blown away by how closely I fit the description.

I have copied the chart, but you can find the authors page here… Read the rest of this entry »

My ADD Wandering Mind (or my Fractured Focus)

By Bruce · Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008 · No Comments »

Previously I wrote about getting lost.   I am sure that other suffers of ADHD / ADD understand when I say ‘getting lost’.  My therapist and I have dug into it and figure out why and when this happens.

I think I have a lead on the answer.

First a little background.   I am currently in the middle of paying off a chapter 13 bankruptcy.  I got to this point because I ignored bills, ignored a budget, and was extremely impulsive about my purchases.  This led to getting way behind in everything. I didn’t want to deal with it so, I spent more money.  That didn’t help. Read the rest of this entry »

ADD - Help Me To Focus

By Bruce · Thursday, August 28th, 2008 · No Comments »

Lost focus again at work and started surfing the web.  I came across this poem (not really a poem, but I don’t what else to call it).   Found it on http://lifewithadhd.com .   This looks like a really good blog.   As soon as I get time I will check out the rest of the posts.

I think this was originally written for childeren with ADHD, but it certainly fits Adult ADD also.   I know it fits me.

ADD - HELP ME TO FOCUS …

Please teach me through my sense of touch.
I need “hands-on” and body movement.

I NEED TO KNOW WHAT COMES NEXT … Read the rest of this entry »

Therapist Session

By Bruce · Thursday, August 28th, 2008 · No Comments »

Met with my therapist yesterday.  I was always one to think that there really is no point in going to talk to a ‘professional’ about what I am thinking.  “I can just fix it on my own.” Read the rest of this entry »

My NON-ADD Spouse

By Bruce · Sunday, August 24th, 2008 · No Comments »

I know that my wife has suffered through the years because of me not dealing with my ADD. I am so thankful that she stuck with me, believed in me, and kept encouraging me to go seek professional help.

I came across a blog entry on adhdmarriage.com that just about brought tears to my eyes. It is a bunch of quotes from spouses of ADD’ers. I thought you might be interested…

Here are a few….

Thoughts and actions are not equally satisfying: You may be thinking about me a lot, but when you are off in your own world, or distracted by something else, I have no way of knowing that. To me, it feels as if you almost never think of me. It makes me sad. In the future, can you take a few seconds and show me through actions, not thoughts, that you are thinking of me? A short kiss, an “I love you” or some other action will mean a lot to me. Read the rest of this entry »

Vacationing with ADD

By Bruce · Sunday, August 24th, 2008 · 1 Comment »

I am sitting here still at the Beach, last night of vacation. Car is all packed up so that we can leave early in the morning. I am actually ahead of schedule.

My first vacation since I was diagnosed with ADD. I must say that I think it was one of my best vacations. Not sure if it was the medication (Adderall and Pristiq) or the therapy sessions where we talked about going on vacation, but it was good.

What made it good? I was able to sit on the beach for hours at a time and just do nothing. I was not bored, I was not thinking of all the things in my life that I needed to do. I was actually able to relax. Read the rest of this entry »
